This dog treat is awesome and all natural. Our dog absolutely loves them. This ancient food has been turned into a nutrient packed dog treat. The milk is boiled and the resulting cheese is dried and smoked for months. You can puff it in the microwave. Normally these treats are chewed by humans in the Himalayas. The tradition comes from ancient Mongolia. Apparently, the cheese is like a smoked parmesan. The chew is 52% protein. They are great for dental health. Cheese has great enzymes that helps clean up the plaque on your pet’s teeth. There is no smell despite what you would think.
What are Himalayan Dog Chews?
Himalayan or Everest cheese is a fully digestible, all natural, long lasting dog chew. This is a great treat for every dog: from the smallest Chihuahua to the largest XXL breeds. It is hands down the longest lasting dog chew.
What is a Himalayan Churpi?
Chhurpi is a traditional cheese from the Himalayan regions of Nepal, Sikkim, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Bhutan, and Tibet. The two varieties of chhurpi: hard and soft. Guess which one became a beloved pet treat? The hard variety of course!
Himalayan Dog Chew comes from an ancient recipe. It is made using traditional methods with yak and cow milk and all natural products and no chemicals or preservatives.
Himalayan Cheese Dog Chews on Shark Tank
The original Himalayan dog chew company was actually featured on an episode of Shark Tank in the U.S.A.
Everest Dog Chew Yak Cheese Puffs
Here’s the deal: you could technically buy cheese puffs for dogs made out of Himalayan cheese. Our tip is to make them at home. You can simply microwave the little nubs of hard cheese that your dog can no longer chew. When heated, the hardened yak cheese nubs turns into a cheese puff, almost like doggy popcorn!
How long do you microwave a Yak Cheese Dog Chew?
Himalayan dog chew microwave instructions are pretty simple: microwave the end of the cheese chew for 45 seconds and voilà ! A cheese puff for your pup.
Dog Chew Safety Concerns
Are Everest Cheese Chews Safe?
Yes they are but just like any treat, you should keep an eye on your pup when they play with it. Himalayan dog chews are great for the teeth as they help your dog scrape plaque off.
Help! My dog swallowed Himalayan Cheese!
We’ve seen instances of pet owners talking about their dogs swallowing a cheese chew. You should always supervise your dog when giving them treats. If you think your dog is likely to swallow the darn treat whole, please, do not buy this type of thing. If foreign objects are swallowed by your pet, you should always seek a vet’s advice right away.
What are the best Himalayan dog cheese chews for dogs?
There are a few brands that produce yak cheese chews for dogs. We’ve tried a few of them and can’t tell the difference.
Ecokind Gold Yak Cheese Dog Treats
This brand of Himalayan yak dog chew is really well rated on Amazon. They also make Himalayan cheese sticks for those interested. Many users report that these chews are super long lasting: between 7 to 10 hours for dogs. Careful though: someone reported that their pet swallowed one. This resulted in a hefty vet bill.
Side note: we had people keep talking about another brand, Himalayan gold dog chew. Seems like it is the old name for the Ecokind brand of dog treats now. Can someone confirm this?
Ruff Roots Dog Chews
We heard about this through the Dog Geek blog’s review of ruff roots dog chews. We loved what they had to say. Basically it hurts when dropped on your toe, costs a bit much when you think about but is a great solution for power chewers. Nothing beats hardened yak cheese when it comes to that!
Where to Buy Himalayan Dog Chews
You Can Buy Them Online at Amazon
You can find these treats on Amazon. You can even buy them in bulk on the platform! These are absolutely the types of treats you can order in bulk because they will remain good for a long time. We tend to buy them in packs of 3. The bulk option seems really attractive if you own multiple dogs or if you have a heavy chewer. Our miniature dachshund is a heavy chewer but the smallest chunks are already a big challenge for her!
Yak Dog Chews Are Also Sold at Petstore
You can buy different brands of these treats at Petsmart in the United States and Canada or at Mondou in Québec specifically. The pet store by our house tends to carry alternative brands of the cheese chews. The oddest place we’ve seen them sold was at TJ Maxx.
Are they Good for Big Dogs?
These healthy treats are available in different sizes. Yak milk dog chews come in extra-small, small, medium, large and extra-large. Our pet store only sells the medium and the large ones most of the time. It can be a challenge to find XL versions of the yak dog chew. We recommend buying them online once you find a brand you like. It will be easier.
Pet Peeve: People Who Think That Everest Cheese Treats are Bones
Let’s be clear about one thing: just because you feed your dog these yak chews does not mean that they are some sort of all natural vegetarian bone. These things are hard as a bone but they are not bone. There is no such thing as a Himalayan cheese bone. I don’t understand why I keep hearing people refer to these things as bone…

helped me a lot with my dog.
My Morkie is almost 4 lbs overweight and the vet cut back on all treats.
She loves these Himalayan dog chews.
But I’m worried, could these chews be causing her weight gain?
Hello Faith,
It is possible, however, they’re mostly known to be very high on proteins. If you are worried. Limit your dog’s consumption and keep an eye on her weight.
Good luck!
My dog has gained 3 pounds since giving him these treats. I put him on weight management and he has gained still. I need answers and no one seems to address this. I have no idea how many calories in this treat. Have you had any answers ? Thank you Harriet
My dog is working on a Yak bone now and it certainly sounds as though she could break a tooth on it. Am I worrying unnecessarilt?
Hello Darlene,
From our experience yes! Our dog finished many Himalayan yak cheese during her life, chewing hard on them, and she never had any issue.
If you are really worried, you can limit the chewing sessions to 20-30 minutes and check your dog’s teeth each time.
Good luck!
You can also soak them in hot water which will soften them a little.
Thanks for the tip Elk!
Hi, there
Our Boxers absolutely LOVE their Himalayan chews!!! 😃
Our youngest has chronic pancreatitis so we have to be careful with what we give her.
What’s the maximum amount of fat in the average size chew? (For a 55 to 65 lb pup)
Thanks a bunch!
I accidentally washed my Himalayan dog chew in the washer machine while doing laundry . Is it still safe to give my dog
Hello Patricia,
We would think so! Except if you used anything special for your laundry.
Let us know how it turns out!
What is the duration per day that I should allow my dog to chew the Himalayan cheese dog chew? And how should I store it when my dog is not chewing it? Thank you!
Hello Christine, like any treat / chewing toy, it should be 30-45 minutes. But our dog never got sick will chewing on it for longer. Regarding how to store it, we don’t do anything special and it doesn’t turn bad. Thank you
Is the cheese variety any more or less fattening than the peanut butter?
I just read a comment thread that the original yak chews made with Yak Milk, last longer and do not splinter.
Someone posted that the “imitations” splinter and break up much easier than the traditional ones made with just Yak milk.
I’m a dog show vendor and know that since the product has become so popular, it’s become very popular for them to be made with mostly cows milk (plus Yak’s don’t produce enough milk to keep up with the demand).
I just attended a large pet industry trade show and am now scratching my head on if it really makes a difference.
on a side note, it would be lovely if you would do more to promote independent retailers/ brick and mortar stores vs pushing amazon.
We have a 15 week old puppy who is s real power chewer ! We thought a Yak chew would be fantastic but have read that they are not suitable for dogs under 4 months old . Any idea why ? Is it the salt content ?
Hello Simeon,
We recommend you to check what the manufacturer indicates on their packaging and/or ask your vet. We also read that it was not recommended but we’re not sure why!
Thanks
possibly too much protein in the diet for a baby, but do ask; then come back here and let us know.
I was told by a friend that the
yak cheese chew could damage a puppies teeth if the puppy is an aggressive chewer. The baby teeth are not as hard as the permanent teeth. After puppy has all their permanent teeth, the yak cheese chew should be fine. But I would check with your vet.
When I microwave the last part for a “doggy puff” can there be sharp edges to be concerned about, or would the puff just dissolve due to saliva? I had bought one for my 10 year old boxer and he LOVES them!
Hello Kathy,
Maybe keep an eye on your dog the first time she/he eats the cheese, but from our experience sharp edges are not an issue, since they are chewed quickly and are not too hard.
Have fun!
My pups (3 under 2yrs) love these chews. They’re Cajun Heelers so they’re high energy. They’ll argue over them and then go find the leftover pieces and be fine. It’s been great for my pups.
Is there any other way to make the “puff” at the end of the Himalayan treat besides a microwave? Because I do not have one 🙂
Can a moldy yak cheese make my dogs sick. They arrived moldy. I washed them in hot water but still afraid they will make them sick.
Hello Missy,
They’re not supposed to but we advise you to keep an eye on your dogs when they start chewing them.
Thanks
Is there anything you an do to the small pieces we have leftover. Don’t want my doges to swallow.
Thanks
yes you can throw the ends into the microwave for 30-60 seconds and it makes a cheese puffs. Let cool for 1 minute then give.
My Pitbull is a power chewer, he weighs 75 lbs. These Himalayan chews are THE BEST bang for my buck. He can’t get enough of them & of course the cheese puff at the end is a bonus. He eats about 2-3 per week and I have not noticed a substantial weight gain because of them.
my labrador, Draco, is a hyper chewer and he’ll chew for HOURS on anything if given the chance. These chews are perfect for when he hasn’t been able to chew in a bit since they dont hurt his gums like rawhides/bones so i dont have to worry about his mouth bleeding. Similarly, he loves the treats and the small splinters that come off them my smaller dog, Oreo, can nab and chew on herself. One bone, two happy chewers!
I received ecokind yak chews from Amazon everything looked fine no damage to the bag perfect upon opening I recognized the smell of a damp must basement I looked at the chews they seem to be fine all I noticed was a couple powdery white spots that what I think is slight mildew I put them in a bowl of vodka and scrubbed them with a tooth brush and rised them with water towel dried them and put them in front of a fan to make sure the moisture couldn’t sit on them doesn’t mold grow on the surface (outside) and not on the inside of the chew. do you think these are still ok to give my dogs?
