Here are some tips and products to help you keep your pup looking great. Get that glow and lustrous coat. Also, proper dog grooming is important for your best friend’s health.

How Does one Go About Bathing a Yorkie?

Well…it can be a tedious affair. You may end up wetter than the dog itself. Silver lining: your dog is small enough to be safely and comfortably bathed in the sink.

Need Help Figuring Out How to Bathe Your Dog?

Start with the chest, then go to the head, down the back, all the way to the tail to then finish all the way down the hind legs. Do not get any shampoo in anybody’s eyes here…that stuff stings!

Do Yorkies need special shampoo?

Yes and no. Yorkshire Terriers, just like any other dog breed should not be bathed using human products. Let it us repeat it once more here:

Do not use a shampoo made for humans to wash your dog.

Shampoo for human hair works for us but it’s very harsh on a dog’s skin. Get shampoo made for your pet.

The Best Shampoos for Yorkies

This particular dog breed requires regular grooming and bathing. Here are the things we look for when picking shampoos for our dog:

  • Hypoallergenic to help deal with sensitive skin
  • Avoid shampoo made with harsh chemicals, artificial additives like colors, fragrances, parabens, phosphate, and sulfate. Labels can be tricky on this so Google well!
  • Moisturizing shampoos with ingredients like oatmeal, aloe vera, and almond oil.
  • Soap-Free : soap can dry out the skin
  • pH Balanced for dogs (between 6.5 and 7.5)

Some Great Yorkshire Terrier Shampoo Options:

Your Basic Shampoo

Pick a basic shampoo that you will rely on before branching out and trying new products or brands. This is what we aim for: cruelty-free, vegan, environmentally-friendly. Bonus: we aim for a really nice smelling shampoo to keep your dog smelling good.

Puppy Shampoo

Puppies have extra-sensitive skin. Look for a tear-free formula that’s gentle on the skin.

Anti Flea & Tick Shampoos

You should have a shampoo to kill fleas and ticks, especially come summer time. This product should never be considered a replacement for a preventive flea treatment.

Medicated Dog Shampoos

There are shampoos designed to soothe skin conditions. Your dog may not need this type of shampoo.

Shampoo for Long Haired Dogs

You can always opt for a highly specialized type of shampoo formulated for long haired dogs.

2-in-1 Shampoo and Conditioner

Look for a 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner to keep that coat looking shiny and feeling soft.

Stuck With a Smelly Dog?

Skin conditions such as dry, irritated skin often cause a higher oil production. This is what causes the stinky smell sometimes.

How often should a Yorkie be bathed?

Bathe your Yorkie once a month with a shampoo made for dogs and brush her daily to keep the coat tangle-free and neat. I read somewhere that you should wait at least 21 days before bathing a dog as it gives its body time to renew skin cells and body oils. If you have a long haired dog, you need to wash it more often because long hair collects dirt faster. We recommend once a week at the most.

Regularly Groom and Brush Your Dog

A Yorkie is like a poodle, both breeds need to be trimmed every 4 to 6 weeks. In between appointments with the groomer, trim the hair around the *butthole* to help keep your dog clean.

Ask Your Vet

Yorkshire Terriers are prone to allergies and other health issues that may cause them to smell a bit. Please check with your vet to get the all clear on your pup if you don’t know what’s causing their body odor.
