The English bulldog is a brawny little powerhouse with a crablike waddle. Find out more about this awesome dog breed.

What Do English Bulldogs Look Like?

The English Bulldog is a thick-set, low-slung, well-muscled dog whose RBF is only rivaled by Winston Churchill’s mug! They are incredibly wiggly and adorable.

What Is The Temperament Of A English Bulldog?

The English bulldog has a sweet, gentle disposition. They are kid-friendly. If you need a loving family dog, go for a bulldog!

Are English bulldogs an aggressive breed?

Bullies love human attention. However, they still have some old bull baiting instincts so they make great watchdogs. They tend to get along with other family pets. The reason why people think they are aggressive is because the breed is known for its tendency to be aggressive toward unfamiliar dogs.

Do English bulldogs like to cuddle?

Yes, bulldogs are master cuddlers. They are gentle, affectionate and very loving. As they grow older they may mellow out even more. Not all dogs show the same way so if you want a snuggle bug, go for an English bulldog!

What Were English Bulldogs Bred For?

Over more than three centuries, bulldogs were bred for aggression. Until 1835, bull-baiting was a legal practice. This is something I read online somewhere: “an 80-pound dog could easily bring down a bull weighing close to a ton by corkscrewing its own body around its neck, tossing the bull over its own center of gravity.” Yeah, that’s scary. I remember reading as a child in a book that bulldogs were impossible to shake off. Their bite is renowned to be much worse than their bark. Couple that with a stubborn nature and I can see why they were good at bull-baiting.

Why Do English Bulldogs Sleep So Much?

Don’t be fooled, bulldogs are not the sleepiest breed of dog. The average dog sleeps between 12 and 14 hours a day. If you have your bulldog since puppyhood, you will notice that as your pet ages, they will get more and more mellow. This may entail more chilling in the sunlight on the carpet and less ball chasing.

Do Bulldogs purr?

Purring bulldogs, yes, you read that right, bulldogs do purr. The characteristic shape and structure of the bulldog play a huge role in the purring. Brachycephalic breeds have shorter snouts than most dog breeds. This is what contributes to the purring.

Why Do English Bulldogs Stink?

Yes, bulldogs are notorious for their stink. They are more susceptible to skin problems such as skin fold dermatitis and pyoderma. Those two skin problems can cause a serious stench. Here are the main reasons why your dog may smell bad:

  • Smelly Facial Folds
  • Infected tail pocket
  • Flatulence
  • Ear Infections
  • Impacted Anal Sacs
  • Food and Seasonal Allergies
  • Sweaty Feet: Dogs sweat through their footpads. Enough said.
Why Do English Bulldogs Stink?

But wait…what’s that smell? Is it a fart? Could it be that your beloved bullies are little farting factories? We are sad to confirm that yes, bulldogs are known to be very productive farters.

Why do Bulldogs fart so much?

These pups tend to have sensitive stomachs and as such, they do not digest food that well. Their short nose and flat face makes it more difficult to eat as well so they eat fast and inhale a lot of air…which causes farting. I don’t think I’ve ever met an English or a French bulldog that hasn’t farted at least twice in my presence. I can absolutely confirm that they do fart their fair share.

Why is my English bulldog surprised or scared of their own farts?!

This is a hilarious situation. Imagine if humans did that? Every time our dog does that at home, we always end up cramped from laughter. Our dog sometimes gets scared of her own farts. Normally, she is more of a silent but deadly type of farter. But once in a while, she will let a loud fart rip and then run away scared. At this point, the only logical theory I have is that the sound scares them. Their fart sound may resemble something that scares them like a sudden bang.

How To Get Rid Of Tear Stains On English Bulldog?

We found an awesome website answering that question. If you need grooming tips, you should also check out our article on bulldog grooming. To get rid of tear stains, you need to clean your dog’s eye area but you also need to help keep the tear stains from coming back.

How do you prevent new tear stains from appearing on your bulldog?

  • Your vet should check if eye duct surgical procedures could help.
  • Avoid grain products or other foods that could cause allergies (and extra tearing)
  • If you suspect the tear ducts are infected, go to your vet!
  • Buy stainless steel food and water bowls that you clean daily.
  • Pure or distilled water may also help.
  • Try giving your dog one-half of a fruit-flavored Tums tablet twice a day.
  • HEPA air purifiers can eliminate 99.97% of airborne allergens and irritants to help you out!

Here is a tip we found online: Add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to change the pH

You should add a teaspoon white cider vinegar to your dog’s water bowl. Start with a few drops and increase until you reach the teaspoon. Your dog may be weary of its water at first, give it time. Source: the Southern California Bulldog Rescue
