Flying With a Dog Aboard Austrian Airlines

Are you flying to or from Austria with your dog? You should really book with Austrian Airlines then. The airline, which connects almost every corner of the world to Austria, is very convenient for travel planning. We were pleased to learn that a Montreal – Vienna line was launched this previous winter. It is our preferred flight to come to Europe.

During our trip to Europe in February 2019, we booked all our flights with the Star Alliance. We were flying to Austria from Montreal with our dog on Swiss, and looking for a company – part of the alliance – that links Vienna to Berlin. We were a little more specific: in addition to the fact that she had to accept Mocsing in the cabin, we wanted to arrive directly at Tegel, an airport near the Mitte, in Berlin. Austrian Airlines immediately emerged as the preferred option because of its flights between the two capitals, serving Tegel. The Great Bits About Austrian

• This airline is part of the Star Alliance and of the Lufthansa group. This offers some advantages.
• The staff was warm and super efficient and the aircraft interior was recent.
• We were allowed to board with priority boarding.
• It systematically use Terminal 3 of Vienna International Airport, which is very new, spacious and pleasant – this is not the case with Transavia, for example.
• Incredibly cool: the airline offers to check in directly at the Landstraße metro station in Vienna (although this service may be reserved for direct train users to the airport). We can even leave our luggage there, which is very practical!

Small Complaints About Austrian

• The only downside: we were forced to pay to fly with our dog when we checked in shortly before taking off, whereas the agent with whom we had made the reservation over the phone had assured us that it was done
• Ah and also, the price for the dog to fly is high – 60 euros for each flight in our case

Austrian is a Dog-Friendly Airline

The airline seems to have a similar policy to Swiss and Lufthansa. Austrian Airlines accepts dogs in the hold and cabin. Of course, there are additional fees to be paid, and it is required that your dog meets the conditions to fly. Here are the restrictions to fly with a dog flight on board an Austrian plane:

• You can travel with 2 pets maximum
• The animal must be in good health
• It must be at least 12 weeks old – 16 if you are flying from the United States
• If you travel with a puppy, it must be weaned
• To fly in the cabin, your dog must be no bigger than the size and weight set by the company – more about this later in the article

Austrian accepte-t-elle les chiens en cabine ?

Comme Swiss et Lufthansa, la compagnie permet aux chiens pesant maximum 8 kg (incluant le sac) de voler en cabine. Vous pouvez donc voler avec votre petit chien à bord de ses avions. Comme à l’accoutumée, il devra rester dans son sac en tout temps, sous le siège devant vous.

À noter qu’Austrian ne permet pas les chiens en cabine si vous volez vers le Royaume-Uni, l’Afrique du Sud, Hong Kong ou l’Irlande du Nord.

Quelle est la taille réglementaire de sac pour chien avec Austrian ?

Austrian Airlines vous demande de ne pas utiliser un sac pour chien dont les dimensions dépassent 118 cm (55 x 40 x 23 cm). Avec votre chien dedans, il ne doit pas faire plus de 8 kg.

La compagnie précise que le sac (ou la “caisse” comme ils appellent cela) avec laquelle votre chien sera doit être “anti-fuite”, souple, résister aux morsures et être bien aéré.

Enfin, votre animal doit pouvoir se lever dedans et se retourner. Notons d’ailleurs que le personnel de sol d’Austrian vérifie bien que c’est le cas – du moins, c’est ce que nous avons vu.

Le processus de réservation

Nous avons rencontré les mêmes difficultés qu’avec Air Canada ou Swiss : si vous volez avec votre chien, vous devez effectuer votre réservation par téléphone, impossible de le faire en ligne. Par contre, nous avons été en mesure d’acheter les places de notre animal en même temps, ce qui n’est pas toujours possible.

Comme avec Swiss, nous avons pris le soin de choisir nos vols sur le site d’Austrian et de noter les références avant d’appeler. Lors de notre appel pour réserver, l’agent s’est occupé de tout en une fois. Par contre, pour une raison non élucidée, le paiement que nous avons effectué durant cet échange n’a pas inclus le prix pour voler avec Mocsing. C’est lors de notre enregistrement avant de décoller que nous l’avons appris – car, sachez-le, le personnel vérifie avec grande attention le paiement. Nous avons par conséquent dû payer à ce moment-là, ce qui n’était pas forcément très agréable, car nous n’avons eu peur d’être chargés deux fois.

Prévoyez en tout cas une preuve de paiement pour votre chien, car, comme vous pouvez le voir, elle est demandée systématiquement. Aussi, n’oubliez pas qu’Austrian Airlines permet à un nombre limité d’animaux de voler en cabine dans un même avion. Ne réservez donc pas vos billets avant d’être sûrs de pouvoir prendre une place pour votre chien également.

Le coût d’un chien en cabine avec Austrian Airlines

Bon, et combien cela coûte ? Tous les tarifs sont fournis en ligne par Austrian. Ils vont de 50 euros pour les vols intérieurs à 110 euros pour les vols longs couriers internationaux. Les prix sont donc les mêmes qu’avec Swiss.

Voler avec son chien en soute avec Austrian

Comme dit précédemment, les chiens de plus de 7 kg (dépendamment du poids de votre sac) ou qui ne peuvent pas rentrer dans un sac de 118 cm ne peuvent voler qu’en soute. Vérifiez bien le poids de votre chien et les dimensions de votre sac pour ne pas avoir de problèmes lors de votre arrivée à l’aéroport. Nous pouvons confirmer qu’Austrian vérifie.

Quelles sont les conditions à respecter ?

Austrian ne vous permet pas de voler avec plus que deux animaux et ceux-ci doivent faire maximum 14 kg (chaque). La compagnie spécifie aussi que des conditions spéciales s’appliquent pour les chiens de combat. Enfin, elle se laisse le droit d’inspecter votre animal pour s’assurer de sa bonne santé, de sa taille et de son comportement.

Picking the Right Dog Cage

Like most companies, Austrian expects your cage to comply with IATA regulations:

• Be large enough for your dog to get up and turn around
• Contain food and water
• Be solid and waterproof
• Be well ventilated
• Have a solid bottom cover that absorbs liquids

Snub-nosed Dogs Requirements

If you are flying with a dog with a snub-nosed or fighting nose, you must contact the company, as additional requirements apply to it. If you don’t, you could have serious problems at the airport.

Dog Travel Costs for Trips in the Cargo Hold

All prices are available on the airlines’ website. They range from 80 euros for an internal flight to 380 euros for an international flight in the hold with a cage that goes beyond 60 x 45 x 40 cm. As you will have noticed, Austrian Airlines applies an overload for dogs that have to fly in a cage larger than 60 x 45 x 40 cm. It’s simple: prices double.

Other Important Details

Arrivals at Berlin and Vienna Airports

We flew with Austrian between Vienna and Berlin (Tegel), then Berlin (Tegel) and Vienna. This flight is short and convenient, as it takes off from the T3 at Vienna Airport to Tegel, which is 30 minutes from downtown Berlin. Access to Vienna is easy, with the express train, and even with a regular train. The T3 is spacious, clean and very pleasant. Its architecture and layout are recent and perfect to wait a few hours.

Tegel is less pleasant, because it is quite old and saturated. But once again, it is our preferred airport in Berlin, as it is accessible by bus from Mitte, which is ideal. The bus only costs a few euros.

We were able to board as a priority on both our flights. The company’s aircraft offer space and were relatively empty. A snack is offered on board and the trip is short (about 1h30 of memory). In short, these 2 flights were pleasant and we had no problems with Mocsing.
